One of the saddest events in music history was the tragic death of Tom Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival. An obituary published in The New York Times stated tuberculosis as the cause of his death. But Tom Fogerty died from a respiratory failure that was caused by another deadly disease. The rhythm guitarist and vocalist for Creedence Clearwater Revival had been diagnosed with AIDS. This disease was still relatively mysterious to much of the general public.

The most tragic part of Tom Fogerty’s death was that he acquired HIV through a blood transfusion as part of back surgery. It was a great sadness for Creedence Clearwater Revival fans but also for the former band members. While Tom Fogerty was part of the reason for the band’s incredible success, he eventually left the band in 1971. This was due to creative differences with other members of the band.

The sad part is, Creedence Clearwater Revival was at the height of its popularity. One might have imagined that they’d get to the same level as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, or KISS. The band’s breakup wasn’t an amicable parting of ways. The band members experienced many lawsuits and had issues with each other. This included a feud between Tom Fogerty and his brother John. These kinds of feuds are often public and are horrible publicity for any band. It’s perhaps because of this that Creedence Clearwater Revival didn’t get propelled to the stardom that they deserved.

However, as we reflect upon the tragic death of Tom Fogerty, we can perhaps remember his talents and his contributions to Creedence Clearwater Revival. Perhaps on reflection, we can develop a new appreciation for the band and that this appreciation can continue for future generations.
