Creedence Clearwater Revival had performed since 1959 under various names like The Four Winds, The Blue Velvets and The Golliwogs, but John Fogerty and Doug Clifford were drafted to serve the US Army. After they got discharged from their duty, the group got together again and struck a new deal with Fantasy Records owner Saul Saentz. They released a single called "Porterville" under Scorpio, a subsidiary label of Fantasy. Despite the efforts, the single flopped, but the group already had a deal to record a full-length LP which was recorded during late 1967 and early 1968.
