Words by me:
Was looking 'longside the highway, rolling up the countryside, thinking ’bout last summer’s heatwave.
Now we’ve left all that hot weather behind.
Saw some grass and benches standing by the road.
I was smiling there - autumn’s in the air.
“Do you wanna,” I was thinking, “get some fresh air?”
Sandwich maker, bring your basket and a cup of tea.
Sandwich maker, won’t you go on a picnic with me?
Snipping off a few bread slices, spreading butter with a debit card, spinning the lettuce in your sock - it looks so easy, but it might be hard.
I turned away to see you adding two fish from a jar.
When you laid them down, I saw your shoe.
“Do you wanna,” I was thinking “add some pepper too?”
Sandwich maker, bring your basket and a cup of tea.
Sandwich maker, won’t you go on a picnic with me?
Your basket had a gingham blanket and a cool transistor radio, with a bottle of something orange to sip on all the afternoon.
The pièce de résistance was in a special tin - a perfect little cake with a cherry at last.
“Do you wanna,” I was thinking, “share your repast?”
