The Republican National Committee sent a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates this week, letting them know that they are most likely going to make their candidates sign a pledge to skip the 2024 presidential debates. This is not surprising, as Donald Trump - the likely 2024 Republican nominee - has whined constantly about how supposedly "unfair" the moderators have been to him. But this is a Party of cowards who are afraid to be called out to their faces, as Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains.

Yesterday, the Republican party officially the Republican national committee, the RNC sent a letter to the commission on presidential debates, the nonpartisan group that puts on the presidential debates and has been for nearly 40 years at this point. But the RNC told them that we're going to make our candidates most likely sign onto a pledge that says we will not participate in any presidential debates put on by the commission for presidential debates. Now this doesn't mean right off the bat that Republicans are definitely going to skip the presidential debates in 2024. But it does, of course, give them the leeway to say, hey, we told you so now we're sitting out. And of course the rationale is absolutely stupid here. They claim that, oh, the commission on presidential debates is just so darn mean to our Republican candidates and we will not agree to any debates until we can guarantee that all candidates are on what they call quote, a level playing field. Whatever that means.
They're mad that moderators have pressed Republicans on issues, which is the job of moderators in a debate. So what's really happening here is that the Republican party is scared. The Republican party knows that they don't have any real policy platforms to stand on. In fact, they've gone as far as to publicly announce they're not even releasing party platforms in this year's midterms. They're literally running on nothing and they don't want to be pressed on that nothing. They don't wanna be asked the tough questions of what exactly do you stand for? Why are you out here saying these things about critical race theory that you know are blatantly false? Why is your party trying to ban books from public libraries? Why did you say that the January 6th Capitol riot was nothing more than tourists walking through the Capitol? You know, those are the questions that the RNC does not want any of their candidates to be asked.
So of course they say, we're just not gonna participate. And to that, you know what, I say, fine. I think the commission on presidential debates needs to keep doing what they're doing. Schedule your debates. Whoever shows up, shows up. If the Republicans say we're not gonna participate, wonderful. Run with the Democrat and throw some other third party candidates up there too. That's what should be done anyway. If they wanna sit it out, they're making the personal choice to do that. While debates are not mandated, obviously as part of a presidential run, they are a tradition. And of course it's a good opportunity for any candidate to go out there and speak their message directly to the public. These are aired during prime time on pretty much every single network out there. So most Americans really have no choice but to tune into these things. And if the Republicans don't want to take part in it, fine.
Be cowards, run away. We'll get on just fine without you. You know, Donald Trump sat out the second presidential debate last time and of course it ended up hurting him. And then he got mad when Biden still showed up and they did a town hall with him. He threw a temper tantrum about that. Claimed the media was biased for it, even though it was an already scheduled thing that was supposed to happen. So again, be cowards. Run away from the debates and we all know you're really doing this.
