An acoustic guitar lesson on how to play “Michelle" by The Beatles | Paul McCartney

Recorded on November 3rd, 1965, Michelle won the Grammy for song of the year in 1966. It’s such a classic Beatles tune. It’s essentially Paul’s song with John helping out a bit. McCartney has a really thorough understanding of music, especially chord changes and melodies and this tune is a great example of that. The cool thing about a lot of The Beatles music is that it always sounds so simple, but many times there are a lot of unusual and interesting things going on musically and the songs are much more complex than they sound.
The use of that Bflat7#9 chord is interesting. It’s the second chord in the progression after the intro. I think that most folks just play a straight B flat minor 7th here because it actually sounds better because of the flat third. I talk about this quite a bit in the video…

The guitar solo although played by George, was composed by George Martin and apparently he played it on a keyboard while George Harrison was recording the guitar part to help guide him along. George Martin is/was such a skilled engineer, arranger and composer. I think it’s pretty clear that he was the fifth Beatle. They were the greatest songwriting, arranging and recording team the world has ever seen with the Beatles providing the creativity and vision, and George Martin adding his technical knowledge to actually bring to fruition the ideas that were floating around.
I had a really great time working on this song. I hope you enjoy the video.

I get a lot of questions about my sound so here's what I'm using:

The acoustic guitar I'm playing here is a Taylor 214ce koa deluxe. I really like this guitar, it intonates amazingly well and its tone is very balanced. It's also very easy to play.
The strings are Elixir phosphor bronze 12-53 with nanoweb coating. These strings are a little bit more expensive, but for me they easily last 4-5 times longer than non-coated strings.

My amp is an Egnater Renegade head. I am using a Two Notes Torpedo Live. It’s a load box and a speaker emulator so I’m not running the Marshall 1960b speaker cabinet anymore. It enables you to crank up your tube amp but use headphones, or just listen at low volume through your monitors, so I can be rocking out and getting a great sound without bothering people around me. So far I like it!
I use a TC Electronics Nova System through the loop for effects. I also have a BB preamp which I essentially never use anymore, and sometimes (rarely) a Boss CS-3 compressor. The reverb is from the amp. My wah is a Dunlop MC404 CAE Dual Inductor, REALLY great pedal! I also use a Polytune tuner which is fantastic.

Folks may be surprised at how much time and effort goes into creating these videos. If you're getting something out of the lessons and can afford to contribute, I've setup a Paypal link. If you can't afford it no worries, but if you can, any amount is appreciated and will help me to continue to make the videos.
