Helter Skelter meets Bela Bartok
Alan Futterman
Bremerton WestSound Symphony
Paul McCartney's Helter Skelter is perhaps the first Heavy Metal, Grunge or Punk performance by a rock band in the 60s. My memory banks scoured the classical repertoire for a piece that could somehow compete with this in high-powered, frenetic energy. I recalled the intense rhythmic drive, biting cords and thrashing violinists during Bela Bartok's 4th string quartet, a work which is truly central to his entire output. What would happen if I combined these two incredibly disparate genre pieces and created a new orchestral miniature? My colleagues at the Bremerton WestSound Symphony absolutely rose to the occasion, donned their dark glasses and helped me create what might be the very first orchestral performance of punk music.
