The song

“Have You Ever Seen the Rain” was released as a single in 1971 from the album Pendulum (1970) by roots rock group Creedence Clearwater Revival. The song charted highest in Canada, reaching number one in March 1971. In the US, it peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the same year.

John Fogerty told Rolling Stone Magazine in 1993:
"That song is really about the impending breakup of Creedence. The imagery is, you can have a bright, beautiful, sunny day and it can be raining at the same time. The band was breaking up. I was reacting: ‘Geez, this is all getting serious right at the time when we should be having a sunny day.’"
The lyrics of the song allow many interpretations and over the years Jon Fogerty himself has explained it in many different ways.

My personal interpretation is that this song metaphorically deals with the theme of depression (the rain), of how this disease can persecute you even when everything around you seems to be perfect and shining; and so Jon Fogerty, author of the song writes: "I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain, comin' down on a sunny day?"

Have You Ever Seen the Rain? is a song by Creedence Clearwater Revival, written by John Fogerty and published in 1970 in the album Pendulum.

The Artists
Creedence Clearwater Revival, known simply as Creedence or CCR, were an American rock group, active from 1967 to 1972.

The formation was led by John Fogerty, guitarist, singer and, on several occasions, a multifaceted instrumentalist, as well as main composer of the group.

His brother Tom accompanied him on rhythm guitar until December 1970; Stu Cook (bassist) and Doug Clifford (drummer) completed the quartet.
Their musical style, influenced by country, blues and rock 'n roll, was repeatedly defined swamp rock, literally "swamp rock"; however, the continuous references to the South that can be encountered in their original lyrics have meant that Creedence Clearwater Revival have often been framed, over the years, in the subgenre of Southern rock.

Lyrics
"Have You Ever Seen the Rain" by Creedence Clearwater Revival

[Verse 1]
Someone told me long ago
There's a calm before the storm
I know, it's been comin' for some time
When it's over, so they say
It'll rain a sunny day
I know, shinin' down like water

[Chorus]
I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
Comin' down on a sunny day

[Verse 2]
Yesterday, and days before
Sun is cold and rain is hard
I know, been that way for all my time
Til forever, on it goes
Through the circle, fast and slow
I know, it can't stop, I wonder

[Chorus]
I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
Comin' down on a sunny day

Yeah

[Chorus]
I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain?
Comin' down on a sunny day
