This song was adapted from the Civil War song, Aura Lee by Ken Darby who gave the credit to his wife Vera Matson. Elvis is also given credit. Elvis performed the song on the Ed Sullivan show before the single and movie were released. RCA had orders for over 1 million copies the next day. It debuted at #2 and was the highest debuting record at that time. It was the #15 song of 1956.
