2.18 "It's So Strange"
A Tupelo, Mississippi boy and a Biloxi, Mississippi, girl.
In 1956, Elvis Presley is a well known and loved regional star who is on the cusp of worldwide Super Stardom but in the summer of '56', he's just a young man enjoying fishing, water skiing, shooting, horseback riding, friends, family (including Gladys!) and his girlfriend, June Juanico. This video shows Elvis and crew aboard the Aunt Jennie, on a deep-sea fishing trip in Biloxi, Mississippi, July of 1956. The carefree Elvis, also getting sunburned, had to wear pants and long sleeves while water skiing. The other rarity this video is, GLADYS! Both Gladys and Vernon came down from Memphis to join the fun. On the boat, you can see Gladys being her loving mom self and tending to her son, as he fishing.
June met Elvis Presley for the first time after one of his early concerts in Biloxi in 1955. The two would meet again later in Memphis. It was then that June and Elvis became serious. June, Elvis and family vacationed in Biloxi, they rode horses at Gulf Hills, rode motorcycles, fished and did many other things together. June also went on tour with Elvis in Florida. This was a huge year for Elvis! He was on the rise and would gain superstardom by the end of 1956. June is perhaps the only one or most definitely part of a very few ladies that developed a close relationship with Elvis' mother, Gladys, who gave her approval of the relationship.
"... I was married for 36 years, and I've got two beautiful children and beautiful grandchildren. I've been blessed in many ways. But I have just never been able to stop loving Elvis." -June Juanico
June wrote a book about her time with Elvis.
"Elvis in the Twilight of Memory" 1997
It's a sweet love story and is interesting as it recounts a time when 20/21 yr old Elvis was growing in fame regionally, "Hound Dog" was climbing the charts, his movie "Love Me Tender" was filming and his fame would explode to the degree that no other musical artist had or has.
Songs:
"Summer Kisses, Winter Tears," written by Fred Wise, Ben Weisman & Jack Lloyd, was written for Elvis to sing.
"It's So Strange," written by Faron Young
Thank you for watching!
