On January 30, 1964
Elvis purchased the USS Potomac, the former presidential yacht of Franklin D. Roosevelt for the price of $55,000.

On February 13, 1964
Elvis, presented the yacht as a gift to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis for them to use to raise funds as they see fit. The ceremony took place in Long Beach, California on February 14, 1964 with actor and hospital founder Danny Thomas accepting the yacht.

St. Jude, raised $75,000 from the yacht.

The USS Potomac, built in 1934 is now preserved and docked at Jack London Square as a US National Historic Landmark in Oakland, California. She is available for dockside tours and daytime cruises in the San Francisco Bay.
