To say 1977 was a horrid year would be an understatement for Elvis Presley. Health problems lead to several hospital visits, near comatose states just hours before going on stage. Looking gaunt and tired, touring his bones to death just to stave off debts , Elvis was begging for help, and yet nothing was done. Yet his voice and smile never wavered in times of trouble. Which brings us to a song that was a mainstay of power and pain, that was glued to Elvis's harmonic voice almost entirety during the 1970s, Bridge Over Troubled Water.
A song written and sung by the famous duo of Simon and Garfunkel, Elvis morphed the song into a cry of passion, wanting to be the friend that helped you across a rocky stream, yet by 1977, Elvis was the one in need. A cry for help that was overshadowed by greed and cheers, never once wavered from him. While only done 3 times during 1977, Elvis performed them with such passion, it was over in the blink of a tear.
In this video, I cover all three renditions of the song, one recorded on April 29, 1977 for possible use in Moody Blue, another by a fan on May 27, ending with the most famous version being from his last concert on June 26. Please enjoy.
