Born in McComb, Mississippi, Elias McDaniel, grew up in Chicago and learned to play guitar as a teenager. He formed his own band in the early 1950's and played on Chicago street corners for donations. While he was perfecting his craft, he also worked construction and boxed as well. He auditioned for Chess Records in 1954, taking the stage name, Bo Diddley, and his debut single on the Checker label was a two sided classic. The A-side, Bo Diddley, and the B-side, I'm A Man, both became #1 Billboard R n' B chart hits in May of 1955. From that point forward, the self-proclaimed, The Originator, released a consistent stream of blues and R n' B that became one of the foundations of 1960's rock and roll. His work, known for it's humor and unorthodox lyrical content, became hugely popular in the U.K. and inspired much of the material recorded by U.K. musicians of the 1960's.
